Course Information, licenses and exam dates.

Foundation Course.

Previous knowledge is not required for this course as it is very basic. The technical content, which some people are apprehensive about,is deliberately kept low key and easy to follow. The object of the course is to teach operators how to behave when transmitting and what to do if they are having problems such as interfering with their neighbors TV reception etc. This course does not teach how to repair radios' and there are no practical technical sessions involved such as circuit construction, soldering etc.
A Morse code appreciation session is also held (this is not a test) where the candidate shows the ability to send and receive Morse at no particular speed.

The length of the course is approximately 9 to 12 hours and is held in 2 hour sessions during club night. There is a 45 minute test at the end of the course, consisting of 25 multi choice questions. Passing the course will result in an MW3 callsign enabling the student to use all the permitted frequencies (bands) except for the 10mtr band (28Mhz), with a maximum power output of 10W (10dbw ) or as detailed in the Terms,Provisions and Limitations BR68 booklet
.

The cost of the course is as follows. The club does not charge for the course, but all members and those attending the course pay £2 per club night.

The RSGB charge £15 for the examination administration.

The cost of the license is £15 per year, (SOON TO BE FREE UNDER NEW OFCOM RULES ) to be sent with the pass certificate and application form to the Radio Licensing Center. (Address on application form)

Courses are normally held when there are four or more applications.

The Radio Communication Examination. (RCE. Formerly the RAE)

From January 2004 the new format of RCE applies.
The examinations must be taken in the following order:

1. Foundation.

2. Intermediate (Formerly the Novice examination).

3. Advanced (Formerly the RAE or full license)
.

From July 2003, there has been no distinction between the ‘A’ and ‘B’ licenses due to the CW examination being no longer required.
The Foundation license still requires the CW assessment i.e. Being able to send and receive CW at no particular speed and with no examination ‘pass’ or ‘fail’.

Please note that only those holding the Advanced license may operate abroad including operating under CEPT and also obtaining a reciprocal license.

Exam charges
Foundation-£20.
Intermediate-£25.
Advanced-£30
for non RSGB members.
RSGB members pay £5 less.

City & Guilds have withdrawn from the examination of radio amateurs and the RSGB is now responsible for running the RCE at all levels.

OFCOM is the controlling body, previously the Radiocommunication Agency.
